ams and Osram redefine high-end lighting with new quantum dot LEDs

     The ams Osram Group announced the launch of a new quantum dot LED, the Osconiq E 2835 CRI 90 (QD). Over the years, LED technology has continued to evolve and the demand for high-quality, energy-efficient general lighting solutions has increased. Various manufacturers have been working on developing LEDs that meet this requirement, and ams Osram is no exception. The Osconiq E 2835 CRI 90 (QD) pushes efficiency values to new heights, maintaining excellent efficiency even in very high CRI and warm light conditions. The special 2835 package brings further system advantages to luminaire manufacturers.

     Quantum dots (QDs) are special semiconductor particles that emit different wavelengths of light depending on their size when illuminated with blue light. Due to its unique properties, very fine adjustments can be made to achieve exactly the desired color temperature with excellent efficiency in the warm white spectrum. Peter Naegelein, Director of Lighting Product Management at Osram at ams, said: “We have specially developed quantum dot phosphors and are the only manufacturer on the market to offer this technology for general lighting applications. The Osconiq E 2835 is also the only product of its kind in the proven 2835 package. The LEDs are evenly lit and the quality is amazing.”

     The Osconiq E 2835 CRI 90 (QD) is capable of delivering color temperatures from 2200K to 6500K with excellent efficiency of over 200lm/W. With a power of 0.5W and a size of 2.8mm x 3.5mm, the compact size facilitates compact and efficient lighting designs. Quantum dots have good absorption properties, thus reducing the number of nanoparticles required. Unlike other phosphors in general lighting, the development of quantum dot solutions is still in its infancy, but future generations are promising. A unique feature of ams Osram's quantum dot solutions is that they are encapsulated in a protective package, making them more robust and less susceptible to moisture and other external factors. Thanks to this special packaging technology, it is possible to use such tiny particles in demanding "chip-scale" operations within LEDs.

     The LED also complies with the stringent requirements for the energy efficiency of light sources in the Single Lighting Regulation (SLR), which will be enforced in Europe in September 2021. Among other requirements, the new regulations require a value of >50 for saturated red, the so-called R9 value. R1 to R8 are used to determine the CRI, and each R value represents a specific color.

     The Osconiq E2835 is also available in two other versions: the CRI 80 component for office and retail lighting solutions and the Osconiq E2835 Cyan. Among them, Osconiq E2835 Cyan is capable of producing spectral peaks in the blue light wavelength range, thereby inhibiting the production of melatonin in the human body, making it ideal for anthropogenic lighting solutions.
