
Osram, the world's leading optical solutions provider, has expanded its 3D sensing product portfolio with a new VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) module, the Bidos P2433 Q. Thanks to components such as the Bidos P2433 Q from ams Osram, various gestures can be more reliably and accurately captured, so applications based on 3D sensing technology will greatly benefit, such as machine vision, facial recognition, augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR). Its compact package also allows customers some flexibility in design.
For AR/VR devices and other 3D field applications, a compact and lightweight design is critical because it maximizes the user experience. In the 3D sensing market, VCSELs are favored for their excellent beam quality, cost efficiency and simple design. The Bidos P2433 Q is available in four different versions with two different launch angles and two output powers. The VCSEL-based module measures 3.3 mm x 2.4 mm and is suitable for 3D sensing applications for time-of-flight (ToF) measurements and meets the need for uniform scene illumination. Due to the wavelength of 940 nm, all modules have no red exposure effect, which is seen as disturbing flicker by the human eye.
The two higher-power modules (6.5 watts) feature dual-junction VCSELs for superior performance with efficiencies as high as 45%. In addition, special sensor monitoring for eye safety is integrated into the module - as soon as a change in light incidence is detected (for example, if the optics are damaged), the current supply to the VCSEL is interrupted immediately.
In addition to 3D gesture recognition, the four new modules can also be used for obstacle avoidance and virtual fences for industrial robots, or for 3D face recognition systems for smart door locks or point-of-sale terminals for payment.
