Vishay Introduces New Automotive-Grade Proximity Sensor with Pressure Sensing Resolution Up to 20 µm

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has introduced two new fully integrated automotive grade proximity sensors, VCNL3030X01 and VCNL3036X01, with resolutions up to 20 µm for a variety of pressure sensing applications. Both sensors integrate photodiodes, amplifiers, and ADC circuits in a 4 mm x 2.36 mm surface-mount package that is only 0.75 mm thick

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. introduces two new fully integrated automotive-grade proximity sensors with resolutions up to 20 µm for a variety of pressure sensing applications - the VCNL3030X01 and VCNL3036X01. Both sensors integrate photodiode, amplifier and ADC circuitry in a 4 mm x 2.36 mm surface mount package with a thickness of only 0.75 mm. The VCNL3030X01 uses an onboard infrared transmitter (IRED); the VCNL3036X01 can be configured with up to three external IREDs, using an onboard driver with internal logic.

The devices announced today are AEC-Q101 qualified for use in automotive, consumer, smart home, industrial, office and toy products, improving resolution and reducing cost compared to previous generation sensors. The VCNL3030X01 and VCNL3036X01 prevent false triggering and even allow users to wear gloves when used in pressure sensing applications such as vehicle steering control, smart power buttons and multi-touch touchpads for laptops, and touchpads for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and kitchen appliances . The VCNL3036X01 uses an external IRED to improve the flexibility of product design.

The device supports an I²C bus communication interface, and a programmable interrupt function allows designers to set high and low thresholds, reducing continuous communication with the microcontroller. The new proximity sensor has optional 12-bit and 16-bit output, uses intelligent cancellation technology to eliminate crosstalk, and intelligent continuous design ensures accurate sensing capability and quicker response time. The VCNL3030X01 emitter peaks at 940 nm and has no visible "red tail".

The VCNL3030X01 and VCNL3036X01 sensor IRED/LED pulse current is 200 mA, the supply voltage is 2.5V to 3.6V, and the I²C bus voltage is 1.8V to 5.5V. When used in pressure sensing applications, the sensor provides the flexibility to fine-tune short-distance displacement currents. The device is RoHS and Vishay Green compliant and halogen free.
