
Via Group's high-speed transmission and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) chip designer Weifeng Electronics announced on the 16th that it has launched the world's first USB4 terminal device control chip VL830.
The advent of the USB4 specification is regarded by the industry as a major update to the USB architecture, since multiple data and display protocols can share a high-speed connection channel and support a transmission rate of up to 40Gbps. Under Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 architecture, the VL830 can provide full performance operation of both USB and DisplayPort transport, with a maximum bandwidth of 32.4Gbps for DP 1.4, And compatible with USB Type-C architecture DP Alternate Mode (DisplayPort Alternate Mode) devices, including laptops, tablets or smartphones that support this mode.
Compared to the DP alternative mode using USB Type-C, VIA Labs VL830 offers up to twice the image transmission bandwidth. Up to a single 8K 60Hz high dynamic range (HDR) display and multiple USB 3.2 Gen2 devices can be supported at the same time (depending on the performance of the master). When paired with DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST), the VL830 can support multiple 4K or high update rate displays while also offering USB high-speed data transfer.
VIA Labs VL830 integrates a USB 3.2 hub with five downlink ports and a DP 1.4a output to take full advantage of the 40Gbps bandwidth provided by the USB4. A 10×10 chip size package (FCCSP) is used. Now there are various USB Type-C expansion bases, multi-function adapters and other related products, in the early design stage decided to use Weifeng Electronics VL830. For VL830, Weifeng Electronics will begin supplying selected partners in the fourth quarter of 2021.
