Toshiba launches MN09 series of 18TB NAS mechanical hard drives with 9-disk helium packaging

     Toshiba has just brought a new member to its "Network Attached Storage" (NAS) HDD family, the MN09 series with a massive 18TB capacity. Officials say the rapid growth in data creation is driving customer demand for higher storage capacity. Whether it is fast data access in SOHO office, or archiving and data sharing capabilities based on a private cloud environment, the 18TB MN09 mechanical hard drive can well meet the relevant needs.

     As an HDD using a conventional perpendicular recording (CMR) solution, Toshiba has also introduced innovative flux-controlled microwave-assisted magnetic recording (FC-MAMR) technology to the 18TB MN09 to balance high capacity and energy efficiency. It spins at a standard 7200 RPM, but has a higher single-disk density than previous 4TB ~ 16TB models (MN04 ~ MN08 series), packs 9 platters into a 3.5-inch standard SATA 6Gbps HDD form factor, and uses helium gas to seal.

     It is reported that the new MAMR head can significantly improve the writing capability of the microwave-assisted switching (MAS) effect. In addition, Toshiba will continue to make efforts to further improve the data density of CMR hard disk drives through this technology.Finally, Toshiba's MN09 series 18TB NAS HDDs have 512MB of "high-capacity" cache onboard and sustained data transfer rates of 268 MiB/s.
