Toshiba is about to launch a new generation of 20TB HDDs, in desktop and NAS versions

     According to Tom's Hardware news, Toshiba's new generation of 20TB mechanical hard drives is about to be launched. In addition to the nearline storage version for enterprises, this series of SSDs also has desktop and NAS versions.

     According to reports, Toshiba's current 18TB hard drive for nearline storage is the MG09 series, which uses FC-MAMR technology and is filled with 9 platters of helium. Now, the 10-disk MG10 series with FC-MAMR technology has passed SATA interoperability verification with a capacity of 20TB. In addition to enterprise-grade products, the lineup of HDDs includes the MN10 for NAS and the MD10 for desktops.

     IT House recently reported that Toshiba has confirmed that it plans to release a 30TB mechanical hard drive in fiscal 2023 and release larger models in the next few years. The new high-capacity HDDs will use technologies such as FC-MAMR (magnetic flux control-microwave-assisted magnetic recording), MAS-MAMR (microwave-assisted switching-microwave-assisted magnetic recording). In the future, Toshiba may use HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology in its largest drives. According to the roadmap, Toshiba will also release 35TB HDDs in fiscal 2025, and 40TB+ models after fiscal 2026.
