Texas Instruments has introduced a new automotive battery monitor and equalizer that can accurately report voltage measurements in systems up to 800 V. In addition, the BQ79616-Q1 simplifies compliance procedures for the safety integrity class ASIL D for hybrid (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV).

     Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a new automotive battery monitor and balancer that accurately reports voltage measurements in systems up to 800 V. Additionally, the BQ79616-Q1 simplifies compliance procedures for Safety Integrity Level ASIL D for hybrid electric (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV).

     A major design challenge for automakers is how to filter system-level noise to accurately measure battery voltage and temperature and accurately report this information to the microcontroller (MCU). The BQ79616-Q1 addresses both challenges, helping engineers achieve battery safety goals and maximize vehicle range per charge in wired and wireless battery management systems.

     The BQ79616-Q1 battery monitor and balancer is the industry's first device with a patented fault wake-up function. When used in conjunction with the BQ79600-Q1 SPI/UART communication interface, it can completely shut down the system when the vehicle is parked or turned off. This helps design engineers conserve battery power, improve cell balancing performance, and meet safety requirements.

     The BQ79616-Q1 is the first in TI's next-generation battery monitor and balancer product line to support high-accuracy monitoring of batteries of various chemistries, including lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). This enables automakers to more accurately measure battery state of charge and state of health, reducing costs. The BQ79616-Q1's integrated digital low-pass filter and high-precision analog-to-digital converter optimize signal measurement accuracy, enabling battery voltage measurements with an error of less than 2 mV.
