To advance autonomous driving technology and improve vehicle safety, Texas Instruments announced the new AWR2944 in-vehicle millimeter-wave radar sensor, which helps automakers improve the object sensing capabilities of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

TI's new AWR2944 mmWave radar sensor extends its broad portfolio of analog and embedded processing products and technologies, providing automotive engineers with more tools to drive innovation in automotive systems. The sensor will enhance vehicle performance in areas such as rapid object detection, blind-spot monitoring, and efficient cornering and cornering navigation, paving the way for automakers' vision of a collision-free driving experience.

"Navigation in lane changes and tight turns is one of the most complex design challenges our customers currently face," said Yariv Raveh, business unit manager for millimeter-wave radar at TI. "To create a safer driving experience, driver assistance systems must Process massive amounts of data quickly and accurately and interact with drivers clearly.”

According to the Federal Highway Administration, more than 50 percent of traffic fatalities and injuries occur at or near intersections¹. With the entry into force of the new motor vehicle safety requirements of UN Regulation 79 and the updated New Car Evaluation Procedure (NCAP) standards, automakers must improve steering systems to support advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving features. To learn more about the latest safety requirements, read the technical article What ADAS Engineers Need to Know About New NCAP Radar Requirements.

The 77 GHz AWR2944 mmWave radar sensor helps automakers meet these safety regulations while delivering excellent RF performance in a small form factor (about 30% smaller than current mmWave radar sensors). The AWR2944 sensor integrates four transmitters with 33% higher resolution than existing millimeter-wave radar sensors, enabling vehicles to detect obstacles more clearly and avoid collisions.

"In addition, the unique hardware configuration of this new sensor provides Doppler Division Multiple Access (DDMA)-based signal processing to sense oncoming vehicles at a detection range 40 percent farther than before." Jiang Hong, director of embedded product systems and applications of Texas Instruments (TI) China, introduced at the press conference.

TI's ADAS solutions include high-performance integrated system-on-chip radar sensors, efficient edge AI processors, and automotive-compliant power management ICs (PMICs) such as the LP87745-Q1 for radar monolithic microwave processors. Multi-Rail PMIC), enabling automakers to develop vehicles that are more sensitive to their surroundings.      "The ability to detect corners has historically been a challenge for autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles. This challenge is also an opportunity to design high-quality ADAS systems that help enhance vehicle perception," said Curt, manager of the Jacinto™ processor business unit at TI "For autonomous parking and autonomous driving, using devices such as the AWR2944 sensor to detect objects at greater distances, and then using our Jacinto processor to process the data seamlessly, can improve vehicle perception and safety," Moore said.
