TDK is the first in the industry to recycle PET film for multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs)

TDK has been the first in the industry to establish a recycling system that recycles PET film used in the manufacturing process of Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors (MLCCs).

●This TDK system can successfully reuse PET film that is usually only heat recovered or incinerated directly in the MLCC manufacturing process

●In practical application, the utilization rate of recycled PET film is increased to 20%

 

Generally, the surface of waste PET film produced during MLCC manufacturing is specially treated and cannot be reused without any further treatment. Therefore, the mainstream practice is to heat them up or incinerate them.


In contrast, the new TDK system cleans the surface of waste PET film, reducing it to a PET plastic form (as pellets), which is made into film by PET film maker TORAY Corporation. TDK then buys these films and treats them specially so that they can be reused in the manufacturing process. The recycled PET film used in the system reduces CO2 emissions by about 10% compared to conventional PET film. *2


The system will be rolled out in stages starting in January 2022. TDK will first use recycled PET film for MLCC. When expanding beyond MLCCs, TDK will increase the use of recycled PET film to 20% to further reduce waste and carbon dioxide.
