TDK Introduces Ultra-Small TVS Diodes with Ultra-Low Capacitance and Clamping Voltage

     TDK Corporation has expanded its portfolio of TVS diodes for bidirectional overvoltage protection with the introduction of the ULC series of TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes with ultra-low capacitance and clamping voltage. With the diode's ultra-low capacitance value, the new SD01005SL-ULC101 (B74111U0033M060) and SD0201SL-ULC101 (B74121U0033M060) models have a minimum capacitance of ~0.5 pF and ~0.6 pF at 1 MHz, respectively.

     The new ULC series features ultra-low residual voltage protection. For products with a starting voltage of 6.3V, under the condition of a peak current of 8A, the residual voltage level is ~3.8V; the peak current is 16A, and the residual voltage level is ~5V. Both models feature a maximum operating voltage of 3.3 V and a breakdown voltage of 6.3 V, and feature ultra-fast response and ultra-low 1 nA leakage current (@3.3 V).

     The new protection element is not only robust and high-performance, but also meets stringent miniaturization requirements: Wafer-level chip-level packages (WL-CSP) are only 400 x 200 µm (WL-CSP01005) or 600 x 300 µm ( WL-CSP0201). In addition, the 01005 (only 100 µm in size) or 0201 (150 µm in size) in ultra-low profile designs also offer excellent performance.

     The design of the new protection element meets the IEC 61000-4-2 standard, and its ESD contact discharge voltage of up to 15 kV is well ahead of the standard requirements. Despite their small size, they have high inrush current carrying capacity up to 7 A and meet the requirements of the IEC 61000-4-5 (8/20µs) standard.

     With ultra-low parasitic capacitance and clamping voltage, and ultra-small size, the new components enable reliable ESD protection, ideal for high-speed interface ICs, as well as USB 3.1, USB 3.2, HDMI, FireWire and Thunderbolt data lines. Typical applications include smartphones, laptops, tablets, wearables and networking components.
