TDK Introduces Compact CeraLink Capacitors in EIA 2220 Size

     The TDK Group has expanded its proven CeraLink® series capacitor portfolio to cover small sizes. Previously, the portfolio consisted only of large-size models ready to use. To expand its range of applications, we have introduced a small version with a classic chip design. The package size of the new series of components is as small as EIA 2220, which is only 5.7 x 5 x 1.4 mm. The models with order code B58043* have an operating voltage of 500V and a capacitance of 250 nF. The new components are currently available in standard and soft-terminated packages, with more size and voltage rating options expected to be added in the future.

     The new components allow an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +150 °C, and one of its unique highlights is the ultra-low parasitic coefficient: at room temperature and 1 MHz, the equivalent series resistance (ESR) is only 40 mΩ, Equivalent series inductance (ESL) is 3 nH; and ESR and ESL values are even lower at higher temperatures. With this feature, the new component achieves high current capability of up to 9 ARMS at 200 kHz and 25 °C ambient temperature.

     Typical applications for the new family of components include use as snubber capacitors or output filter capacitors. The compact CeraLink SMD version can be mounted closer to fast-turning power semiconductors such as IGBT modules, as well as SiC- or GaN-based semiconductors, and its low ESL value enables ultra-low lead inductance.

     The CeraLink family of capacitors is based on lanthanum-doped lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) ceramic technology. Compared to traditional ceramic capacitors, they provide maximum capacitance at operating voltage, and even increase with the ratio of ripple voltage.
