Synaptics unveils new touch fingerprint sensor

     Synaptics, Inc., a leading developer of human-machine interface solutions, announced that it has expanded its Natural ID family of solutions to begin mass production of small area touch sensors to enable secure fingerprint authentication for smartphones, tablets and laptops with fingerprint recognition. Unlike traditional slide sensors, Synaptics Natural ID fingerprint touch sensors recognize fingerprints with a single touch rather than a swipe, simplifying the user experience and providing an easier and more secure way to lock devices and use online services such as retail, banking, and social media portals.

     As consumer electronics manufacturers scramble to differentiate through a more intuitive user experience and mobile payment infrastructure is increasingly adopted, the fingerprint recognition market is also growing. Market research firm IHS recently forecast that by the end of 2014, there were 317 million devices supporting fingerprint sensors worldwide, and that number will grow to 1.4 billion by 2020.
