STMicroelectronics introduces two DC-DC converter chips optimized for isolated step-down regulator designs in industrial and automotive applications. The A6986I and L6986I 38V DC-DC converter ics feature a wide input voltage range and low static current to ensure robust and energy efficient operation in automotive and industrial applications up to 5W.
Isolated step-down topologies reduce the bill of materials in systems that require a stabilized non-isolated primary voltage and one or more isolated secondary voltages. The secondary voltage is controlled by the turn ratio of the transformer and does not need to be regulated by an optical coupler. Common uses include powering gate drivers for SiC MOSFETs and IGBTs that require asymmetrically isolated power rails, and powering isolated interfaces such as RS-232, I2C, and SPI.
Typical applications for the A6986I converter include automotive on-board chargers (OBC) and hybrid/electric vehicle (H/EV) traction drivers. 100% duty cycle capability and a wide input voltage range from 4V to 38V meet cold start and load shedding specifications for automotive systems. The industrial grade L6986I is ideal for motor drivers, solar power conditioning systems, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and welders.
The converter operates in forced PWM mode with peak current mode control to regulate the primary output voltage. The extended negative current limit on the primary side provides additional flexibility to ensure a suitable secondary current using typical transformer coil ratios. These devices feature programmable soft start for enhanced reliability and pulse-by-pulse current detection for constant current protection on the primary side.
A preset current detection blanking time of 300ns filters out oscillations from transformer leakage induction and ensures greater stability during high-end switching. Built-in overvoltage and thermal shutdown protection, and external pins for synchronizing and setting the switching frequency.
