Single battery lithium ion charge management controller with mode indicator and charge current monitor

The MCP73827 is a linear charge management controller for space-limited, cost-sensitive applications. The input voltage ranges from 4.5V to 5.5V. MCP73827 is fully specified in the ambient temperature range from -20°C to +85°C. The MCP73827 combines high precision constant voltage, controlled current regulation, battery pretreatment, and charging status indication in a space-saving 8-pin MSOP package.

The MCP73827 provides a standalone charge management solution with three stages of battery charging: pre-treatment, controlled current and constant voltage. If the battery voltage is lower than the internal low voltage threshold, the battery preregulates the folding current. The pre-treatment phase protects the lithium-ion battery to minimize heat dissipation. After the pretreatment phase, the controlled current phase is entered.

The MCP73827 has the design flexibility of programmable charging current with external induction resistance Settings. Depending on the battery voltage, the charging current rises from the folding current to the peak charging current established by the inductive resistance. This stage is maintained until the battery reaches the charge regulation voltage. Then, MCP73827 enters the final stage at constant pressure. Over the entire operating temperature range and supply voltage range, the voltage adjustment accuracy is better than +1%.

The regulated voltage of MCP73827-4.1 is 4.1V, while the regulated voltage of MCP73827-4.2 is 4.2V. Charging state output MODE Indicates when the charging cycle is converted to constant voltage mode. The charge cycle can be terminated by a timer that starts when the MODE pin reaches a logical high, or by monitoring the charge current monitor output, IMON, to obtain the minimum current.
