The size of the HCK series depends on the capacitance and its ability to collect and store energy in microfarads (μF). Start capacitors send electrical vibrations to start the motor, are designed for motor start only, and have a higher capacitance rating (70μF or higher) than running capacitors.

     Hartland Controls, a Littelfuse company, has start and run capacitors with internal construction to meet various HVAC electrical load requirements. In an air conditioner or furnace, capacitors work with compressors, blowers, and external fan motors. Finding the correct capacitor size is critical to motor efficiency and longevity. The size of the HCK series is determined by the capacitance and its ability to collect and store energy, measured in microfarads (µF). Starting capacitors send electrical shocks to start the motor, are designed for motor starting only, and have a higher capacitance rating (70 μF or higher) than running capacitors. They must quickly bring the motor to a sufficient predetermined speed and then disconnect it from the circuit. After disconnecting the start capacitor, the run capacitor remains connected to the auxiliary coil.

     Since these capacitors are designed for continuous duty, they have a low capacitance rating (typically below 70 μF) and help the motor stay charged by changing the phase angle when the motor is energized, it is easier for the rotor to turn, allowing the motor to run more efficient. Some applications can have dual run capacitors, which are start and run capacitors installed together. Combining two capacitors in one unit creates a more cost-effective option that saves space and is more useful in smaller installation areas
