
Semtech Corporation announced the LoRa Edge portfolio, a new LoRa -based low-power platform that can be software-set defined. LoRa Edge will provide a diverse portfolio of applications for indoor and outdoor asset management, with target markets including industrial, building, home, agriculture, transportation and logistics.
The first product in the family is a geolocation solution that develops revolutionary iot devices for asset management applications featuring low-power Wi-Fi and GNSS scanning capabilities combined with easy-to-use and cost-effective LoRa Cloud geolocation and device management services. Significantly reduces the cost and complexity of using iot to locate and monitor assets.
Pedro Pachuca, Director of iot Wireless at Semtech's Wireless and Sensing Products Division, said: "Semtech continues to introduce iot solutions that simplify and accelerate the development of low power wide area network (LPWAN) applications. "LoRa Edge and LoRa Cloud geolocation services enable customers to develop ultra-low power applications for various industries and will expand LoRa's reach in the iot ecosystem."
Cisco expects that over the next decade, as organizations continue to shift to a more IoT-focused business strategy, there will be 500 billion devices connected to the Internet worldwide, and the majority of these iot devices will require some form of location functionality both at the time of installation and throughout the asset lifecycle. The LoRa Edge geolocation platform will enable solution vendors to take full advantage of LORA-specific location capabilities, as well as GNSS and Wi-Fi scanning capabilities offered by single-chip solutions, enabling customers to select the best location tool for the application task they are working on.
By eliminating the need to add GNSS and Wi-Fi devices, LoRa Edge reduces the bill of material (BOM) cost of the device and significantly reduces design and procurement complexity. Significantly reduce device power requirements and improve asset management efficiency by adding LoRa Cloud geolocation services and providing easy-to-use and cost-effective time-of-arrival (TDOA) data, GNSS and Wi-Fi-based cloud location computing capabilities. LoRa Edge enables customers to further manage the total cost of ownership (TCO) by paying only when they need to position their assets. The best-in-class key and secure connection addition process configured at the time of chip manufacturing further simplifies the development of iot solutions, appropriately meeting the stringent security requirements of customers.
