Samsung has announced a new Exynos processor, the Exynos W920

     Samsung has announced a new Exynos processor, the Exynos W920, which is tailored for wearable devices. It is the successor to the Exynos 9110 chip that was released with the original Galaxy Watch three years ago. The Exynos W920 will debut in the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic tomorrow. While saving more power than the previous generation, the new Exynos W920 chip guarantees faster performance.

     The Exynos W920 is manufactured using Samsung Foundry's latest 5nm process. It features two ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores and an ARM Mali-G68 GPU. Samsung claims its new wearable chipset is 20 percent faster than the Exynos 9110 in CPU tests and offers up to 10 times faster graphics performance. The Exynos W920's GPU can handle displays with up to qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels).

     The new Exynos processor comes in the smallest package available in the wearables space today - the fan-out Panel level Package (FO-LP). It includes Exynos W920, power management chip, LPDDR4 memory and eMMC stored in the same package to make efficient use of the physical space inside the wearable device. This allows the smartwatch to use the space saved to fit a larger battery.

     The chipset also features a dedicated low-power Cortex-M55 display processor to handle AoD (always-on Display) tasks. This reduces the overall power consumption of wearable devices using the Exynos W920 chip. It also integrates GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), 4G LTE modem, Wi-Fi b/g/n, and Bluetooth 5.0. Of course, it supports Wear OS, which is co-developed by Google and Samsung.
