
Samsung Electric announced that it has developed two types of automotive multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCS) for use in Advanced Driver assistance systems (ADAS), an essential safe driving system for autonomous vehicles. ADAS refers to technology that controls machinery by identifying and judging what is likely to happen during autonomous driving, including lane-keeping Assistance systems (LKAS), circumferential monitors (SVM), and intelligent Cruise control (SCC).
With the advancement of vehicle functions, the number of high-performance semiconductors and components installed in the vehicle is also gradually increasing. In particular, autonomous vehicles require a reliable energy supply and signal noise removal so that various chips can receive signals quickly, and with the increase in the number of components, there is an increasing need for small size and large capacity MLCCS due to insufficient installation space. The new MLCC developed by Samsung Electric is a small model with a size of 0603 (0.6mm wide, 0.3mm long) and a capacity of 100nF (nanofarad), and a large-capacity model with a width of 3216 (3.2mm wide). , 1.6mm long) size and 47μF (microfarad) capacity.
The 0603 MLCC achieves the same 100nF (nafarad) capacity as the 1005 product, while reducing the surface area by 64% compared to the 1005 (1.0 mm wide by 0.5 mm long) size. The product is installed at the signal end of the vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU) to eliminate surrounding signal noise and transmit signals accurately.
In addition, the bending strength of the new product is twice that of the standard to prevent the MLCC from being damaged by shock and vibration during driving, improving the reliability of the product. In particular, the product complies with the automotive electronic component reliability test standard AEC-Q200, so it can be used not only for ADAS, but also for other applications such as body, chassis and infotainment.
The 3216 size (3.2mm wide and 1.6mm long) MLCC is a 47μF product with more than twice the capacity of the 22μF product, providing reliable power for semiconductors in vehicles.By miniaturizing dielectric ceramic powder, the core material of MLCC, to the nanoscale and using an ultra-precision lamination method, Samsung Electric has achieved the highest capacity in the industry for products of the same size.
Compared to existing products, the rated power supply voltage (the maximum voltage that can be supplied) is increased by 1.5 times (4V → 6.3V) compared to existing products, while maintaining an ultra-high capacity of 47μF, resulting in increased durability.
