ST Semiconductor introduces a new global shutter image sensor, which makes the driver monitoring safety system economical and reliable

     STMicroelectronics released a new generation of driver monitoring system (DMS) global shutter image sensor to help vehicle enterprises improve vehicle safety. The driver monitoring system DMS continuously monitors the driver's head movement, identifies signs of drowsiness and distraction, and enables the vehicle system to generate warning prompts to protect the safety of passengers. According to the estimation of the Traffic Administration, about 95% of road traffic accidents are caused by human errors, many of which can be avoided by using systems such as DMS. In 2020, the number of deaths in traffic accidents in Europe will be close to 19000.

     The recently issued regulations require that all new vehicle platforms and existing vehicle platforms in Europe will be installed with driver monitoring system DMS in 2024 and 2026 respectively. The number of traffic deaths in the United States is twice that in Europe. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the United States recommends that all semi-automatic driving vehicles be equipped with DMS systems.

     The new global shutter sensor VB56G4A makes full use of the advanced manufacturing technology of BSI-3D image sensor owned by STC. Compared with the traditional front lighting (FSI) sensor commonly used in the first generation DMS, the back lighting solution is more sensitive to light, smaller in size, and more reliable.
