STMicroelectronics (ST), a global leader in semiconductor solutions, has announced the launch of its latest automotive-grade microcontroller, featuring integrated xMemory — an innovative, reconfigurable embedded memory technology. Designed for software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and next-generation electric vehicle (EV) platforms, xMemory represents a major step forward in automotive development efficiency and scalability.
Traditionally, varying memory requirements across applications forced manufacturers to use different chips, adding complexity to development and testing. ST’s xMemory-enabled Stellar MCUs eliminate this bottleneck by allowing dynamic memory configuration. This innovation supports a more agile development model, enabling OEMs to future-proof vehicle designs, reduce time to market, and lower system costs.
The Stellar P6, the first MCU to feature xMemory, targets EV traction inverter systems and is expected to begin production by the end of 2025.
Future-Proofing Automotive Architecture
According to Luca Rodeschini, ST’s Vice President and General Manager of Automotive Microcontrollers, “xMemory gives automakers the flexibility to innovate continuously without needing hardware redesigns. It reduces overall costs and ensures enough headroom for increasingly complex software over the vehicle’s lifecycle.”
Axel Aue, VP at Bosch, added that integrating phase-change memory (PCM) — the foundation of xMemory — offers a robust and adaptable storage approach with superior advantages over alternatives like RRAM and MRAM.
Analyst Anshel Sag from Moor Insights & Strategy emphasized that scalable MCUs like Stellar with xMemory reduce the need for costly hardware redesigns. This flexibility supports in-field updates, simplifies logistics, and accelerates deployment.
Meeting the Demands of SDVs
Modern vehicles must integrate evolving regulations, advanced AI/ML algorithms, and over-the-air (OTA) updates — all requiring significant memory. xMemory allows developers to scale memory during development or after deployment, removing storage limitations from the equation.
Choosing the right MCU early in the SDV development cycle is critical. Over-provisioning increases cost, while underestimating memory needs leads to delays and added complexity. xMemory delivers a cost-effective, scalable solution that supports software growth and simplifies supply chains.
Powered by Advanced Embedded PCM
At the core of xMemory is ST’s embedded phase-change memory (ePCM) — a high-density, energy-efficient non-volatile memory (NVM) technology. ST leads the transition to 28nm automotive-grade eNVM, with PCM offering up to twice the density of competing technologies.
Upcoming Stellar P and G series MCUs, built on Arm® cores and incorporating next-gen PCM, are optimized for centralized domain controllers and body control systems. Meanwhile, the Stellar E series targets EV power conversion systems.
