Rohm and Schwartz SMW200A vector signal generators have released two new frequency options, with the maximum operating frequencies of 56 GHz and 67 GHz, respectively, which bring higher performance for processing 67 GHz and above digital modulated signals.

R&S SMW200A is the first to achieve a flat frequency response greater than 44 GHz and a 2 GHz modulation bandwidth. In addition to supporting all applications up to 44 GHz, the new 100 kHz to 56 GHz option also covers all currently used 5G frequencies, as well as satellite ground link applications. The new 100 kHz to 67 GHz option also supports the planned higher frequency 5G band, 60 GHz WiGig band and inter satellite links.

 

     In the past decade, the upper frequency limit of independent vector signal generators capable of generating high-precision and complex digitally modulated signals was 44 GHz. Higher frequencies can only be achieved by externally connecting a frequency converter or sacrificing accuracy, but both have limitations. Now, R&S SMW200A of Rhodes and Schwartz provides new options with maximum frequencies of 56 GHz and 67 GHz, which greatly improves the limit of generating high-quality bandwidth digital modulation signals. It supports the maximum modulation bandwidth of 2 GHz and meets the requirements for wider subcarrier spacing and broadband satellite transmission defined for 5G FR2 Release 17. The excellent R&S SMW200A signal quality includes excellent modulation, flat frequency response and four hardware based phase noise performance optimization options, which are also applicable to new frequency options.

 

     Applications working in the U and V bands include mobile radio, wireless LAN and satellite communications. For engineers developing RF components and products, R&S SMW200A with 56 GHz or 67 GHz options is an ideal signal generator, which can support the 47 GHz 5G spectrum of North American network operators. The 3GPP Release 17 specification has clearly defined the further enhancement of 5G, so developers need the signal generator to cover the extended FR2 frequency range from 52.6 GHz to 71 GHz. R&S SMW200A, equipped with 67GHz frequency option, supports up to 72 GHz in over range mode, which can be preferred by R&D engineers.


     The new frequency options are also meaningful for high-frequency Wi Fi and wireless LAN, including IEEE802.11ad operating in the 60 GHz licensing free frequency band (57-71 GHz). For satellite communication applications, the forward and reverse links work between 37.5 GHz and 52.4 GHz; Intersatellite links use frequencies up to 66 GHz and bandwidth up to 2 GHz.


     In addition, R&S SMW200A with 56 GHz or 67 GHz frequency options provides higher performance for high-end applications higher than 44 GHz in aerospace and national defense industries, or for the generation requirements of digital modulation signals in the pre research process of 6G components and systems.
