Renesas Electronics Targets Evolving Small Applications in Next-Generation Electrical and Electronic Architectures

     Renesas Electronics Group, a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, announced the launch of two new microcontrollers (MCUs), the RL78/F24 and RL78/F23, designed for automotive actuator and sensor control applications, supporting next-generation electronic and electrical ( E/E) Evolving edge applications in the architecture. With the new RL78/F24 and RL78/F23, Renesas expands the RL78 low-power 16-bit MCU product family, strengthens Renesas' extensive automotive electronics product lineup, and provides customers with high reliability in fields ranging from actuators to regional control. flexible, high-performance solutions.

     As electrical and electronic architectures expand into zone and domain control applications, control mechanisms are also evolving to accommodate body control functions for automotive systems such as lights, windows and mirrors, motor control for engine pumps and fans, and multi-sensor control. Going forward, high-speed and secure connectivity of regional and domain controllers will be mission-critical for electronic control units (ECUs) at the edge. Renesas' next-generation RL78/F24 and RL78/F23 MCUs meet the changing technological demands of actuator and sensor control with rich connectivity, enhanced cybersecurity and functional safety features. The new products support the CAN FD high-speed communication protocol (RL78/F24) and the EVITA-Light safety standard, and are optimized for systems that need to comply with the ISO 26262 functional safety standard ASIL-B.

     The future of automotive system design lies in vehicle-centric, area-oriented electrical and electronic architectures, a shift that further motivates the need for higher-order functionality and superior performance in actuator-controller applications. The new RL78/F24 and RL78/F23 operate at approximately 70% higher frequency than the previous generation, more than doubling the performance of brushless motor control (BLDC) applications. Renesas has also enhanced the hardware accelerator and clock functions for motor control and added a 12-bit A/D converter to provide customers with the enhancements and performance levels they need.
