Power Integrations introduces InnoSwitch5 off-line flyback switch IC

PI has announced the launch of the InnoSwitch™5-Pro series of high-efficiency, digitally controllable flyback switching ics. This single-chip switching IC uses an innovative secondary side control that eliminates the need for additional high-cost dedicated high-voltage switches to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) with an efficiency of over 95%.

     PI has announced the launch of the InnoSwitch™5-Pro series of high-efficiency, digitally controllable flyback switching ics. This single-chip switching IC uses an innovative secondary side control that eliminates the need for additional high-cost dedicated high-voltage switches to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) with an efficiency of over 95%. The new IC integrates a 750V or 900V PowiGaN™ primary switch, a primary side controller, FluxLink™ isolated feedback function, and a secondary controller with an I2C interface to optimize the design and manufacture of compact, high-efficiency single - or multi-port USB PD adapters. Its application areas include laptops, high-end mobile phones and other portable consumer electronics, including designs requiring support for the new USB PD EPR (Extended Power Range) protocol.

 

     Adnaan Lokhandwala, Senior product Marketing Manager at Power Integrations, said: "ZVS, combined with GaN (gallium nitride), can inject magic into the power supply. Switching losses are virtually zero, and we can take advantage of GaN's low on-off losses to achieve ultra-tight adapter layouts with far fewer components than asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) circuits or active clamping schemes. For example, we showed a 140W/28V USB PD adapter that uses just 106 components and is only 4.2 cubic inches in volume. The flyback topology of the InnoSwitch5-Pro IC is much easier to implement compared to the AHB secondary circuit and works at universal input voltages with or without the PFC stage."

 

     The secondary side of the InnoSwitch5-Pro flyback switching IC features lossless input voltage detection for adaptive DCM/CCM and ZVS control, which improves efficiency and simplifies design across the entire input voltage and load range. The IC also has compensation for output tolerances after the product is off the line, enabling high precision output constant current (CC) control of better than 2% to support the UFCS protocol. The overall system is highly efficient, exceeding 95%, allowing designers to eliminate heat sinks, heat conductors and potting materials needed for thermal management, further reducing size, component costs and manufacturing complexity.

 

     The key markets for the InnoSwitch5-Pro series flyback switching ics include adapters with high power density requirements that meet USB PD 3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR), UFCS and a variety of other charging protocols, laptop adapters, and chargers and adapters that are not original single and multi-port outputs.
