OmniVision Technologies has announced the next generation of OH08A and OH08B CMOS image sensors - the first 8-megapixel resolution sensors for disposable and reusable endoscopes.

     OmniVision Technologies has announced the next generation of OH08A and OH08B CMOS image sensors - the first 8-megapixel resolution sensors for disposable and reusable endoscopes. In addition, the new OH08B is the first medical-grade image sensor to feature Howe's award-winning Nyxel near-infrared technology, bringing disruptive imaging capabilities beyond the visible spectrum to the healthcare industry.

 

    The medical grade OH08A image sensor offers 4K/2K resolution in a 7.1x4.6mm package in 1/2.5-inch optical format and 1.4-micron PureCel Plus-S pixel technology. Ideal for chip-on-tip endoscopes. The OH08B offers a larger 2.0 micron PureCel Plus-S pixel in an 8.9x6.3mm package in 1/1.8-inch optical format and uses Howe's Nyxel technology for enhanced visualization in the near-infrared spectrum range.

 

     "Our next-generation OH08A/B8MP image sensor is used in endoscopes with an external diameter of 10-12 mm, such as gastroscopes, duodenoscopes, amnioscopes, laparoscopes and colonoscopes. Their ability to deliver higher image quality and high resolution (60 frames per second) at 4K/2K greatly improves physicians' ability to visualize human anatomy during critical surgeries, "said Richard Yang, senior product marketing manager at Howwell Technologies. "In OH08B, we take the sensor to the next level with Nyxel technology, which performs better in terms of color and infrared sensitivity, enabling physicians to see clearer video during near-infrared, fluorescent, pigmented and virtual endoscopic procedures."

 

     In addition, higher sensitivity can reduce lighting, which reduces the heat at the tip of the endoscope." The OH08A uses Howe Technologies' next-generation PureCel Plus-S chip stacking technology to achieve high performance in the smallest possible chip size. The sensor utilizes this proprietary pixel technology to improve image quality by reducing or eliminating fixed-mode noise, while also providing high full well capacity (increased dynamic range) and excellent low light sensitivity for zero halos and low power consumption. The high frame rate of 60 frames per second reduces dragging and ensures clear and stable images.

 

     The OH08A delivers high-quality 8-megapixel Bayer still frames or 4K video in real time. It features four-in-one (4-cell) three-exposure high Dynamic range (HDR) and tone mapping for optimized HDR at 1080 p60 or 2-frame interleave HDR at native 4K2K p60 resolution.

 

     The OH08B is a larger, higher-performing device that uses Howe Technologies' industry-leading Nyxel technology to deliver high image quality in both color and infrared imaging. Nyxel technology can triple quantum efficiency at 850 nm and 940 nm near-infrared wavelengths. Higher quantum efficiency enables low-power infrared illumination, which significantly reduces the power consumption of cutting-edge chips.

 

     Other key features include OH08A's 15.5 degree master light Angle (CRA) and OH08B's 11 degree Master Light Angle (CRA), which allows the use of wide Angle and short focal length lenses, pulse width modulation output LED drivers, and four-channel MIPI output for raw data. Both sensors have stereoscopic capabilities that enable frame synchronization and support many depth perception applications. In addition, both sensors are autoclavable and can therefore be used to sterilize reusable endoscopes.
