ON Semiconductor introduces the XGS series of CMOS image sensors

     ON Semiconductor introduces the latest addition to the XGS series of CMOS image sensors. The XGS 16000 is a 16-megapixel sensor that provides high-quality global shutter imaging for factory automation applications such as robotics and inspection systems. The XGS 16000 delivers excellent performance at low power consumption, consuming only 1 W at 65 frames per second (fps), making the XGS 16000 one of the best in its class in terms of power consumption, while also providing extremely high resolution for standard 29 mm x 29 mm industrial cameras.

     The XGS 16000 has the same common architecture and placeholder as other XGS CMOS image sensors. This enables manufacturers to use a single camera design to develop products with different resolutions. The sensor supports output of up to 65 frames per second (fps) at full resolution and is available in a variety of speed levels, all with Bayer color or black and white options.

     Camera system developers for intelligent transportation systems, machine vision inspection and industrial automation applications will benefit from the XGS 16000's high resolution and high frame rate. On Semiconductor's Global shutter pixel technology addresses the limitations of relevant roller shutter pixels in these applications, using the global shutter approach to avoid artifacts such as motion blur and distortion. This is increasingly important for automation, detection and identification applications.

     Toshiba Teli, which focuses on the development and manufacture of high-performance cameras that meet application-specific requirements in key market segments including machine vision, medical imaging and security, has integrated the XGS 16000 into its new 16-megapixel industrial camera. The DDU1607MG/MC features a unique dual USB3 interface technology that delivers 16 megapixel black and white and color resolution at frame rates in excess of 47 fps.

     The XGS 16000 is designed with a unique 1:1 square aspect ratio, which helps maximize the image acquisition area within the aperture of the camera lens and ensures optimal light sensitivity. This design makes the sensor compatible with the 29 mm2 industry standard camera format using the commercially available C-Mount lens, taking full advantage of the available field of view and sensor area at the physical size of the camera.

     To simplify the new camera design, ON Semiconductor offers color and black and white versions of the XGS 16000 X-Cube and X-Celerator developer kits. This reference design kit comes with examples of high-speed conversion to MIPI interfaces for faster integration into standard FPGA evaluation environments.
