NXP introduces a complete range of radar sensor solutions for safe 360-degree wraparound detection of vehicles

NXP Semiconductors, a leader in in-vehicle radar, announced the launch of a complete set of new radar sensor chipset solutions that enable 360-degree safe circumnavigation detection for automotive applications while supporting imaging radar target identification and classification.

These solutions, consisting of a new NXP radar processor and 77GHz transceiver, provide automakers with a flexible and scalable configuration to meet NCAP requirements for Angle radar and forward radar applications, while providing the first commercially viable path to mass production for 4D imaging radar. 4D imaging radar extends the function of radar from measuring distance and speed to covering the measurement of direction, boda Angle and pitch Angle. As a core component of driver assistance systems, these solutions represent the direction of radar development and will help reduce traffic accidents and change the status of road traffic accidents that cause 1.3 million deaths each year.

Whether it's a traditional automaker focused on level 1-L3 autonomous driving, or a "mobility as a service" innovator developing autonomous taxis and secure transportation applications to enable level L4-L5 autonomous driving, radar is part of the Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS) core technology. NXP's new radar sensing solution addresses the requirements of both applications and provides a dedicated optimization approach that supports scalability and design reuse, enabling automakers to meet the needs of different brands and vehicle combinations, which in turn can be flexibly customized to the performance requirements of application scenarios, reducing research and development efforts, and accelerating time to market.

 

NXP has launched two new solutions that continue to push the boundaries of radar technology.

 

The new NXP Imaging Radar solution

Imaging radar is a breakthrough technology that significantly enhances radar performance. It not only provides multi-mode capabilities, but also enables accurate environment mapping and scene awareness by providing ultra-high resolution images, thus extending the currently available Level L2+ autonomous driving features such as high-speed cruising and lane change assistance. In urban environments, where vehicles and vulnerable road users add complexity to driving scenarios, this enhanced "perception" is an important part of achieving fully autonomous driving in such environments.

 

NXP's new dedicated S32R45 radar processor, combined with the TEF82xx transceiver, provides fine angular resolution, excellent processing power and detection range, not only to distinguish small objects at a distance, but also to accurately distinguish and classify vehicles and vulnerable road users, such as cyclists or pedestrians, in crowded environments. This imaging capability is designed to provide more rational driving decisions.

 

NXP's scalable angular radar and forward radar solutions

NXP's solution meets the requirements of NCAP Angle radar while being cost-effective and small, enabling automotive high-volume production applications, and providing scalability for long-range forward radar and advanced multi-mode applications such as blind spot detection, lane change assistance, and Angle of pitch detection. These advanced applications require extended range and significantly improved angular resolution to simultaneously detect and clearly distinguish multiple targets, as well as the ability to conduct 360-degree wraparound safety detection of the car. NXP's new S32R294 radar processor, combined with the NXP TEF82xx transceiver, provides a scalable solution that helps automakers efficiently meet NCAP and advanced Angle radar and long-range forward radar sensor requirements while allowing customization for individual use cases.

 

Torsten Lehmann, executive vice president and general manager of the RF Processing Business unit at NXP Semiconductors, said: "Radar's original function was to detect the speed and distance of other cars, but it has evolved to provide high-resolution target and feature detection, enabling accurate mapping of the vehicle's surroundings. Our new radar sensor solutions help customers meet NCAP requirements, ensure safe driving, and help address the cutting edge of ADAS sensing technology on the road to fully autonomous vehicles."

 

NXP was the first company to widely deploy 77GHz RFCMOS radar technology in high volume production, and is the developer of the ground-breaking S32 automotive processing platform, which helps customers optimize costs and provides excellent scalability, design reuse across radar systems, and optimize their own R&D efficiency.
