NXP Semiconductors introduces the i.MX 91 family of application processors

     NXP Semiconductors Inc. introduces the i.MX 91 family of application processors. Based on more than two decades of experience developing multi-market application processors, the family offers an optimized combination of security, functionality and energy saving performance for next-generation Linux-based iot and industrial applications. Emerging agreements, such as Matter or the ISO 15118-20 standard for electric car chargers, bring an inflection point to new product categories in the Internet of Things and industrial markets.

     These new products often rely on Linux, which extends product life by providing developers with the extensibility and programming convenience needed for application development. The company's i.MX 91 family allows developers to quickly create new Linux-based edge devices, including home controllers, connected devices, home entertainment, industrial scanning and printing, building controls, electric car chargers and medical platforms.

     "The i.M.91 family extends NXP's leadership position in smart controllers," said Jim McGregor, principal analyst at TIRIAS Research. "The next generation of Linux devices based on the i.MX 91 application processor will be a high-performance, affordable and secure solution that enables faster and easier adoption of newer protocols or new standards. It provides an essential platform for engineers to add intelligence to traditional embedded and iot systems, while also providing scalability through the larger I.M.9 family."

     As a starting point for the i.MX. 9 series, the new series provides the extensibility and ease of use that developers need to evolve their applications. The hardware and software versatility of the i.MX 93 series provides additional platform options for expanding the product line, thereby maximizing reuse of development investments and shortening time to market. "Our new i.MX 91 family will provide the foundation for thousands of new device categories, with its high performance, connectivity and EdgeLock secure enclave setting a new standard for the Linux platform in iot and industrial applications," said Charles Dachs, senior vice president and general manager, NXP Edge of Industry and Things. "The I.M.91 series enables the platform to evolve quickly, easily shift to new markets and applications, leverage existing investments and simplify product line renewal."

     The application processor is Arm Cortex-A55, running at a frequency of up to 1.4GHz. Support modern LPDDR4 memory, improve platform life and reliability; Dual gigabit Ethernet gateway or multi-network segment support; Dual USB interface; And the basic I/O of products in the module platform of smart factory, smart home, smart office, medical device, metering and cost optimization system. The integrated EdgeLock Secure enclave provides advanced security features such as lifecycle management, tamper detection, secure startup, and simplified authentication paths. Developers can easily access these important security features through security software support provided by NXP.

     This combination of security and manageability brings trust and longevity to a platform design that will be in the market for many years. The series provides company co-developed and cost optimized power management solutions available as part of the I.M.93 series ecosystem. Evaluation kits and software packages for the home combine the company's extensive, scalable portfolio of wireless solutions. This includes the IW612, the industry's first single-chip tri-radio family that supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and 802.15.4. IW612 focuses on Matter to free consumers from the constraints of a single protocol ecosystem, enabling them to enjoy seamless interoperability between different ecosystems and wireless network technologies.
