Edge computing systems require compact programmable devices with low power consumption and a small enough heating area to eliminate the need for fans and other cooling devices while providing powerful computing power. Microchip Technology's medium bandwidth field Programmable gate Array (FPGA) and FPGA system-on-chip (SoC) devices reduce static power consumption by half, have the smallest heating area, optimal performance and computing power compared to all comparable devices, and perfectly solve these challenges.
Bruce Weyer, vice president of Microchip's FPGA business unit, said: "Our new PolarFire FPGas and FPGA SoCs reduce our customers' system costs while helping them solve their cooling challenges without sacrificing bandwidth. The award-winning PolarFire FPGA platform offers the industry's best combination of power consumption and performance. Now we have a lower density product that cuts power consumption by more than half while maintaining best-in-class functionality. No other product in this category comes close."
Microchip's latest low-density PolarFire FPGA (MPF050T) and new PolarFire SoC (MPFS025T) exceed the performance/power metrics of any low-density FPGA or SoC FPGA competitor on the market with ultra-low power consumption. It features fast FPGA architecture and signal processing capabilities, the most powerful transceiver, and the industry's only composite processor based on the hardened application-grade RISC-V® architecture with 2 megabytes (MB) of secondary cache and low-power DDR4 (LPDDR4) memory support. The portfolio includes multi-core RISC-V SoCs with 25K logic elements and FPGas with 50K logic elements, opening up endless possibilities for new applications. They are ideal for low-power intelligent embedded vision applications and heat-constrained automotive, industrial automation, communications, defense and iot systems, where power consumption and performance are required.
The new PolarFire devices can be paired with Microchip's range of devices to provide complete system solutions for intelligent embedded vision, machine learning, security, aerospace and defense, and embedded computing applications. They also provide plug-and-play solutions for power and timing designs. Some major customers are using PolarFire devices to solve a variety of design challenges.
Nick Ma, CEO and CTO of Magewell, said: "As one of the world's leading suppliers of video converter hardware and software, we have been working hard to meet demanding market requirements, working with customers to deliver exciting new use cases. Microchip's PolarFire FPGA solution expands the opportunity for innovation in our USB 3.2 video capture product family. It offers the ideal size, industry-low power, and a unique combination of mid-range transceiver, logic, DSP, and RAM resources."
"Xenics is a pioneer in infrared imaging technology with a 20-year history of providing a best-in-class portfolio of short, medium and long wave infrared imagers, cores and cameras," said Frederic Aubrun, CCO of Xenics. When designing a thermal imaging system, SWaP (size, weight, and power) is an extremely important consideration. These are key differentiating capabilities for our customers. Microchip's SmartFusion 2 and PolarFire FPgas provide the optimal balance between the small size, power efficiency and processing resources needed to support embedded algorithms such as shutter-free compensation and image enhancement on a very low power budget in our current and next-generation portfolio."
Michael Yamposkly, Founder and CEO of Kaya Instruments, said: "Kaya Instruments is committed to designing industrial-grade, small-size, low-power cameras that deliver the best video quality in the most challenging harsh conditions. "The PolarFire FPGA-based Iron camera takes advantage of the small size and low power performance of FPgas to achieve a compact frame that fits into tight Spaces while presenting the gorgeous quality of a state-of-the-art global shutter CMOS sensor with outstanding low light performance."
