Edge computing systems require compact programmable devices with low power consumption and a heat-generating area small enough to eliminate the requirement for fans and other heat-dissipating components, while providing powerful computing power. Medium-bandwidth Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and FPGA System-on-Chip (SoC) devices from Microchip Technology Inc cut static power consumption in half, offer the smallest heat-generating area, optimal performance and The computing power perfectly solves the above challenges.
"Our new PolarFire FPGAs and FPGA SoCs lower our customers' system cost while helping them solve thermal challenges without sacrificing bandwidth," said Bruce Weyer, vice president of Microchip's FPGA business unit. "The award-winning PolarFire FPGA platform provides The best combination of power and performance in the industry. Now we have a lower density product that reduces power consumption by more than half while maintaining best-in-class features. No other product in its class can match.”
Microchip's newest low-density PolarFire FPGA (MPF050T) and newly added PolarFire SoC (MPFS025T) exceed the performance/power metrics of any low-density FPGA or SoC FPGA equivalent on the market with ultra-low power consumption, with fast FPGA fabric and Signal processing power, the most powerful transceiver, and the industry's only composite processor based on a hardened application-grade RISC-V® architecture with 2 megabytes (MB) of L2 cache and low-power DDR4 (LPDDR4) memory support. The product portfolio includes multi-core RISC-V SoCs with 25K logic elements and FPGAs with 50K logic elements, opening endless possibilities for new applications. They are ideal for low-power smart embedded vision applications and thermally constrained automotive, industrial automation, communications, defense and IoT systems where power and performance are hard.
The new PolarFire devices work with Microchip's range of devices to provide complete system solutions for applications such as intelligent embedded vision, machine learning, security, aerospace and defense, and embedded computing. They also provide plug-and-play solutions for power and timing designs. Several major customers are using PolarFire devices to solve various design challenges.
Nick Ma, CEO and CTO of Magewell, said: "As one of the world's leading suppliers of video converter hardware and software, we have been working hard to meet demanding market requirements and work with customers to enable exciting new use cases. Microchip's PolarFire FPGA solution expands our innovation opportunities in our USB 3.2 video capture product family. It offers an ideal form factor, industry low power consumption, and a unique combination of mid-range transceiver, logic, DSP and RAM resources."
Frederic Aubrun, CCO of Xenics, said: "Xenics is a pioneer in infrared imaging technology with a 20-year history of delivering a best-in-class portfolio of short-, mid- and long-wave infrared imagers, cores and cameras. When designing thermal imaging systems , SWaP (size, weight and power) are extremely important considerations. These are key differentiating capabilities for our customers. Microchip's SmartFusion 2® and PolarFire FPGAs provide us with It provides the best balance of small size, power efficiency and processing resources required to support embedded algorithms such as shutterless compensation and image enhancement within a very low power budget."
Michael Yamposkly, founder and CEO of Kaya Instruments, said: "Kaya Instruments is committed to designing industrial-grade, small form factor, low-power cameras that provide the best video quality in the most challenging harsh conditions. PolarFire FPGA-based The Iron camera leverages the small size and low power performance of FPGAs to achieve a compact frame that can fit into tight spaces, while delivering the gorgeous quality of state-of-the-art global shutter CMOS sensors with excellent low-light performance."
