
Melexis announces the MLX81118, a multi-channel LIN RGB LED controller chip with 24 LED driver outputs, further driving creative and dynamic automotive lighting designs. The MLX81118 can drive 8 RGB channels, reducing bill-of-materials costs while simplifying cutting-edge lighting designs inside and outside the car. In addition, the MLX81118 adds dual input voltage capability to significantly reduce LED power consumption for LIN applications.
Melexis has further expanded this product family with the introduction of the MLX81118, a multi-channel LIN RGB LED controller chip for ambient and dynamic lighting applications in the LIN ecosystem. The MLX81118 has 24 outputs (each output can supply up to 60mA) and can drive eight RGB channels. Independent PWM control and resolution configurations up to 16-bit allow this controller to achieve any color point and brightness.
The MLX81118 complements the Melexis MLX81115 and MLX81113 to address a wide variety of application requirements. The MLX81113 is primarily used for traditional interior ambient lighting functions, while the MLX81118 is widely used in applications where multiple RGB LEDs need to be controlled via a LIN node within one or more modules, such as door trim or instrument panel applications. Multi-channel support means that the MLX81118 is also suitable for dynamic lighting effects via LIN control.
In addition to reducing the bill of materials and simplifying the design of multi-channel internal and external lighting systems, the MLX81118 also reduces LED power consumption thanks to the new dual input voltage capability, which optimizes the drive voltage of connected LEDs. This helps simplify thermal management and improve module reliability while reducing power consumption. Built-in direct and indirect temperature monitoring allows temperature compensation for all channels to ensure stable color point over the entire temperature operating range of -40°C to 125°C.
The new MLX81118 is based on Melexis' LIN RGB LED controller with proven features and a complete LIN system including transceivers and protocol processors for connecting the LED modules to the vehicle's LIN network. The LIN interface is compliant with LIN2.x and SAE J2602 and ISO 18987 and supports automatic addressing based on bus parallelism.
LED control is handled by Melexis' MLX16 FX 16-bit RISC microcontroller and an on-chip memory subsystem with 2KB RAM and 32KB Flash (for application and LED calibration coefficients) and real EEPROM (for additional storage customer data). Additionally, the MLX81118 is ISO 26262 compliant for use in functional safety systems.

Manufactured using advanced silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, the MLX81118 features high-voltage I/Os, operates from supply voltages as low as 4V, and maintains stable performance when the vehicle supply voltage fluctuates, such as in stop-start operation. Built-in protection features include 28V jump start, and battery over- and under-voltage detection.this product has a complete tool chain including evaluation boards, in-circuit emulators and C compiler packages to help accelerate application development. Basic software including LIN drivers, color mixing, math libraries and IC initialization routines are also provided.
To better support customers, Melexis can provide custom application software support when needed, and the MLX81118 is now certified to meet AECQ-100 automotive and PPAP requirements. This product is housed in a space saving leadless QFN32 5mm x 5mm thermally enhanced package.
