Maxim introduces a dynamic gesture sensor based on infrared, which can detect various gestures at a longer distance

Maxim Integrated has announced the launch of a new generation of infrared based dynamic gesture detection optical sensors capable of detecting various gestures at longer distances. Compared to previous products, the MAX25405 can detect a larger range of motion, and the detection range is doubled to 40cm; One-quarter the size and 10 times less expensive than camera-based time-of-flight (ToF) detection solutions, it can be used in a wide range of automotive, industrial and consumer applications. These enhancements replace voice communication solutions, allowing drivers to focus on the road.

In addition to optical elements and a 6 x 10 infrared sensor array, the new MAX25405 includes a glass lens for improved detection sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio. The improved performance doubles the range of proximity and distance detection beyond the driver's area, for example, with an infotainment display that detects gesture controls from the co-pilot and rear seat passenger. The MAX25405 is more integrated than competing ToF solutions that require three chips and complex processors. The MAX25405 comes in a small, 20-pin, 4mm x 4mm x 1.35mm square flat leadless pin (QFN) package that works with four discrete leds and is 75% smaller than camera-based ToF inspection solutions.

This highly effective single-chip solution can help the rapid adoption of gesture detection in automotive, consumer and industrial applications, including contactless smart home centralized controllers, temperature monitors and more.
