
Maxim Integrated announced the launch of the MAX16602 dual output regulated power supply for AI processor cores and the MAX20790 smart power grade IC to help developers of high-performance, high-power artificial intelligence (AI) systems achieve their design goals of maximum efficiency (lower energy costs, less heat) and minimum solution size. The AI multiphase power chipset takes full advantage of Maxim Integrated's patented coupled inductance technology to suppress current ripple, increasing efficiency by 1% over competing solutions. At 1.8V output voltage and 200A load conditions, the efficiency is higher than 95%.
In addition, efficiency improvements reduced energy waste by 16 percent. The chipset output capacitance size is reduced by 40% compared to competing solutions, effectively reducing the overall solution size and capacitance number. The chipset provides tailor-made solutions to meet the requirements of different output currents and sizes. In addition, the chipset is suitable for the power supply design of systems such as AI edge computing and data center cloud computing.
In order to meet the rapidly growing demand for AI applications and deep learning, engineers working on the development of hyperscale data centers need to continuously increase the computing power of their systems, while also dealing with many challenges such as increasing peak power and resulting heating issues. The use of MAX16602 and MAX20790 multiphase chipsets can significantly reduce the heat of AI systems compared to competing solutions. Thanks to Maxim Integrated's patented coupled inductor technology and single-chip double-sided cooling power stage IC design, the switching frequency is reduced by 50%, thereby reducing power loss. The single-chip integrated solution eliminates parasitic resistance and inductance between the FET and the driver, resulting in the highest efficiency in the industry.
As designers seek to enhance AI performance, space constraints also pose a huge challenge. The power chipset provides users with the smallest overall solution size, allowing developers to reduce the number of components and bill of materials (BOM) costs. In addition, Maxim Integrated's thin coupled inductor design allows for higher saturation currents per phase compared to competing solutions using separate inductors, which helps reduce the number of working phases of the power supply and helps designers overcome space constraints, while also reducing overall costs.
