Maxim Integrated's latest IR-based dynamic gesture sensor detects gestures at greater distances, keeping drivers focused on the road

     Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. introduces a new generation of infrared-based dynamic gesture detection optical sensors capable of detecting gestures at greater distances. Compared with previous products, the MAX25405 can detect a larger range of motion, and the detection range is doubled to 40 cm; compared with camera-based time-of-flight (ToF) detection solutions, it is only one-fourth the size and 10 lower in cost times, can be used in a wide range of automotive, industrial and consumer applications. These enhancements replace voice communication options, allowing drivers to focus on the road.

     In addition to optics and a 6 x 10 infrared sensor array, the next-generation MAX25405 includes a glass lens for improved detection sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio. The improved performance doubles the range of proximity and distance detection beyond the driver's area, for example, the infotainment display can detect gesture controls for the co-pilot and rear-seat passengers. The MAX25405 has a higher level of integration than competing ToF solutions that require 3 chips and complex processors. The MAX25405 is available in a small, 20-pin, 4 mm x 4 mm x 1.35 mm quad flat no-lead (QFN) package and operates with 4 discrete LEDs, making it 75% smaller than camera-based ToF inspection solutions.
