KEMET Introduces Smallest EMI X2 Film Capacitor Solution for Harsh Environments

     KEMET, the world's leading supplier of electronic components under Yageo, has now launched its latest R53 series of miniature polypropylene film X2 EMI (electromagnetic interference) suppression capacitors. As automotive, industrial, consumer and energy applications require smaller X2-class bulk capacitor solutions to suppress EMI, this family addresses the growing demands of these applications. The R53 series offers capacitance values from 0.1µF to 22µF, lead spacing from 15mm to 37.5mm, 85/85 THB Class IIIB classification, and long-life stability under harsh environmental conditions. Its volume is on average 60% smaller than competing X2-class capacitors, resulting in smaller PCB area, lighter weight, lower cost and higher reliability. These features position the R53 as an excellent X2-class solution that addresses the size, capacitance and reliability challenges of design engineers across multiple industries.

     Currently, solutions on the market comparable to the R53 series are either larger in size or require parallel capacitors in the design. The series is rated at 310Vac at 50 or 60Hz and is suitable for use in Category X2 wire-to-wire applications or in series with AC power. The R53 is ideal for AC/DC converters in xEV onboard chargers, smart grid hardware, EMI filtering in variable frequency drives (VFDs), LED drivers, and high energy density applications such as capacitive power supplies. The R53 series features a metallized polypropylene film encapsulated in a self-extinguishing resin, and an enclosure that meets UL 94 V-0 requirements. Metallized polypropylene film combined with an internal parallel structure provides self-healing properties to prevent catastrophic failure and extend service life.

     Applications requiring miniaturization of electronic components and operation in harsh environmental conditions are growing, such as on-board chargers, smart meters, capacitive power supplies, including series connections to mains, motor drives, wind and solar inverters. R53 capacitors are AEC-Q200 qualified and designed for harsh environments, meeting the highest reliability standards required by smart grid hardware, which are often located in restricted areas where regular service cannot be provided.
