Infineon introduces industry's first USB PD 3.1 high-voltage microcontroller to support higher power

     Infineon Technologies AG has launched the industry's first high-voltage microcontroller (MCU) supporting USB Power Delivery (USB PD) 3.1. The chip, referred to as EZ-PD PMG1 (Power Delivery Microcontroller Gen1), is Infineon's first-generation USB PD-enabled MCU, targeting embedded systems that require high-voltage power supply or power supply up to 28 V (140 W). The device supports higher power as defined in the USB PD 3.1 specification and utilizes the MCU to provide additional control functions. The new products are ideal for many applications in the consumer, industrial and communications markets, such as smart speakers, routers, power tools and garden tools.

     The PMG1 series integrates the market-proven USB PD protocol stack for reliable performance and high interoperability. It features an Arm® Cortex-M0/M0+ processor with on-chip up to 256 KB Flash and 32 KB SRAM, USB full-speed peripherals, programmable general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins, gate drive circuits, low voltage drop (LDO) regulators and high voltage protection circuits. In addition, the PMG1 MCU provides hardware and firmware protection, including overvoltage and overcurrent protection, short circuit and reverse current protection, secure firmware boot and signed firmware updates, and more.

     To improve ease of use for designers, the new devices include programmable analog and digital blocks that make it easy to customize and integrate smart analog sensors into applications. Additionally, the PMG1 MCU is field programmable to support signed firmware updates for increased efficiency. Development is supported by the ModusToolbox™ integrated development environment, which integrates the PMG1's software development kit, prototyping kit and quick start guide to support programming. They make firmware development and testing easy, further reducing overall development time and time-to-market.
