SECORA™ Pay Green from Infineon Technologies AG, a global semiconductor leader in power systems and the Internet of Things, creates the conditions for the manufacture of more sustainable payment cards. With this innovative technology and its positive contribution to global CO2 reduction, Infineon has officially joined mastercard's Green Payment Partners (GPP) Advisory Board. Mastercard and its industry partners have long been committed to reducing the amount of new plastic used in the payment card industry and seeking more sustainable card body solutions.

Significant progress has been made in increasing the reuse of materials and the recycling rate at the end of the card, while reducing the total amount of plastic used in Mastercard-branded cards. Thanks to its CO₂ reduction expertise, Infineon can contribute to the production of sustainable chips and modules, hence this collaboration: With SECORA™ Pay Green, Infineon provides the technical basis for the production of fully recycled dual-interface contactless payment cards without the need for additional card antennas.

According to ABI Research, customers increasingly prefer financial institutions that focus on sustainable banking. In addition, more and more environmental regulations and legal standards have been introduced in the financial industry. The number of payment cards made with recycled polyvinyl chloride (rPVC) worldwide is expected to increase to around 1.2 billion by 2028, equivalent to nearly five times the 226 million in 2022.

Tolgahan Yildiz, head of Infineon's Trusted Mobile Connectivity and Transactions product line, said: "Our launch of SECORA™ Pay Green not only sets a new standard for sustainable payment cards, it also lays the foundation for the payments' industry to move towards a greener future. By reducing CO2 emissions and increasing recycling rates, we support financial institutions and card issuers to make a positive contribution to the environmental cause while meeting customers' growing demand for environmentally friendly solutions."

Joe Pitcher, vice president of mastercard's Sustainable Card program, said: "The products we currently offer have proven that by reducing the use of native plastic, we can enhance the recyclability of payment cards at source. To further drive development and reduce CO2 emissions, we support innovations like Infineon SECORA™ Pay Green, which both demonstrate innovative thinking and reduce environmental impact through product redesign."

Going forward, mastercard and its partners will focus on assessing and reducing CO₂ emissions across the card ecosystem, including chips, modules and inserts. As a new member of mastercard's Green Payments Partners, Infineon will provide sustainable payment solutions to support this effort. Going forward, mastercard and its partners will focus on assessing and reducing CO₂ emissions across the card ecosystem, including chips, modules and inserts. Infineon, as a new member of mastercard's Green Payment Partner, will support these efforts by offering Infineon's sustainable payment solutions. exceet Card Group, Europe's leading card manufacturer, has become the first company to receive a letter of approval from mastercard based on Infineon SECORA™ Pay Green to ship sustainable contactless payment cards without additional chips.

SECORA™ Pay Green helps achieve a more sustainable future

SECORA™ Pay Green is an important part of Infineon's climate strategy, which aims to be carbon neutral by 2030. With this security solution, card manufacturers can produce fully recyclable dual-interface contactless payment card bodies using environmentally friendly and local materials.
