
Diodes Corporation announced the introduction of 16-bit PI4IOE5V6416Q and 34-bit PI4IOE5V6534Q Bidirectional Voltage Potential Conversion Universal I/O (GPIO) expanders for automotive applications. These automotive compliant and AEC-Q100 Grade 2 certified dual-voltage rail devices represent a first for the automotive industry, providing more powerful programmable I/O for the next generation of low-voltage microprocessors and microcontrollers through an I2C interface.
As part of Diodes' continued foray into the automotive industry, these new devices provide engineers with a simple solution when additional I/O is required, while maintaining a minimum level of interconnection, such as in ADAS, in-vehicle information communications and infotainment. These devices simplify the design of new ADAS and vehicle-borne data communication systems and reduce BOM costs by eliminating the need for external voltage potential converters.
Both devices operate from 1.65V to 5.5V on the GPIO port side. At the SCL/SDA end (I2C interface), the PI4IOE5V6416Q operates at 1.65V to 5.5V, and the PI4IOE5V6534Q operates at 0.8V to 3.6V. This dual power rail allows the device to connect to a new generation of low-power microchips at the SCL/SDA end. The extender's standby current consumption is extremely low, with the PI4IOE5V6416Q 1.5μA at 5V, 1μA at 3.3V, and the PI4IOE5V6434Q 2μA at 3.3V.
Each 16 - or 34-bit GPIO on these devices is configurable, and each port has a programmable pull-up or pull-down resistor, as well as a programmable output current. Unlike many I/O extenders, the PI4IOE5V6416Q and PI4IOE5V6534Q also offer programmable open-drain outputs as part of enhanced I/O functionality. These devices feature interrupt masking, which allows designers to mask interrupts from a single GPIO port and initiate system-level operations.
