Dialog expands its AC/DC portfolio with Zero voltage switching technology for high power density Psus

     Dialog Semiconductor, a leading provider of battery and power management, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and industrial edge computing solutions, announced the introduction of an innovative digital Zero Voltage Switch (ZVS) chipset that enables high power density (HPD) power supplies (Psus) of 100W and above. The size is 30% to 50% smaller than a traditional high-power PSU.

     Historically, AC/DC converters have been challenged by thermal limitations related to equipment efficiency. Now, with Dialog's patented ZVS chipset, design engineers can shrink component sizes and reduce BOM costs to enable smaller, lighter power supplies, including power adapters for smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools and other portable devices.

     Dialog's easy-to-use ZVS RapidCharge™ solution includes the primary side controller iW9801 and secondary side iW709 USB PD protocol ics. The secondary side digital compensation loop ensures stability and eliminates the need for additional compensation elements. A synchronous rectifier controller is integrated into the secondary iW709, further reducing the overall component count.

     The solution provides seamless multi-mode control, achieves up to 94% efficiency, eliminates auditory noise in high-power charging, and enables a small, safe, low-heat charger, an environmentally friendly solution that consumes less than 20mW of the machine. The chipset offers robust overvoltage protection (OVP), overcurrent protection (OCP), user-configurable overtemperature protection, common protection, input power-on/undervoltage protection, VSENSE/ISENSE short circuit protection, output short circuit protection, and additional primary side overcurrent protection and overvoltage protection.

     Dialog's ZVS chipset supports most fast charge protocols, including USB PD 3.0, which supports the Programmable Power Supply (PPS) protocol, as well as other third-party proprietary protocols. The chipset uses a switching frequency of up to 200kHz, allowing design engineers to use smaller and lighter transformers and smaller passive devices, thereby reducing the size and weight of the charger. The complete solution uses built-in digital compensation, making circuit design faster and easier than analog solutions.
