Cypress Semiconductor introduces a complete chip and software solution

     Cypress Semiconductor Inc. has introduced a complete chip and software solution for USB Type-C to HDMI/DVI/VGA Adapter Dongle. USB Type-C to HDMI/DVI/VGA adapter solution based on EZ-PD™ CCG1 allows an HDMI/DVI/VGA plug to be plugged into a USB Type-C socket, allowing USB Type-C laptops to connect to HDMI/DVI/VGA displays. In addition, Cypress's new CY4501 CCG1 Development Kit (DVK) helps strengthen its design support for USB Type-C, enabling designers to add USB Type-C functionality to any system.

     The Cypress USB Type-C to HDMI/DVI/VGA solution includes USB Billboard, which allows the adapter to communicate status information to hosts that do not support a display port (DP). This solution uses Cypress's EZ-PD CCG1 (CYPD1120) USB Type-C port controller with DP support as one of its alternative modes. Cypress's USB Billboard controller (CY7C65210) supports the USB Billboard device category, as well as MegaChip's DP to HDMI/DVI/VGA protocol conversion chip. Cypress has worked on the USB-PD Interoperability, Demonstrated the interoperability of its power supply (PD) enabled USB Type-C to HDMI solution with Apple® MacBook, Google Chromebook Pixel, and a variety of other systems.

     Cypress customers can pre-order the new CY4501 CCG1 DVK through the Cypress online store. Based on Cypress's EZ-PD CCG1 USB Type-C port controller, the tool serves as a platform for evaluating several USB Type-C features, with examples and demonstration projects for USB SuperSpeed, display ports and Power Delivery. The CY4501 CCG1 DVK includes a host board that emulates a tablet or laptop, a CCG1 client board that emulates a monitor or docking port, and a CCG1 Electronic Identification Cable Assembly (EMCA) board that emulates a USB Type-C cable.

     The USB Type-C standard is rapidly gaining support among top PC vendors, with its small, easy-to-use connectors and cables capable of transferring data over multiple protocols and offering up to 100 watts of power, a significant improvement over the previous 7.5 watt standard.
