Coherent has launched a lattice projector module for depth sensing applications in consumer electronics and robotics

     As the number of applications for 3D cameras continues to increase, the demand for sensor technology is also growing rapidly - users want professionally configured sensors that can be adapted to a variety of applications and optimized for performance and cost. To meet the growing demand, Coherent now offers a lattice projector module based on a 940 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with points ranging from 600 to 13,000 to meet the depth range and spatial resolution requirements of spot assisted Time of Flight (TOF) 3D camera.

     The new dot matrix projector module enables customers to design high-function cameras that capture the entire scene at a wide Angle and depth range, even in high-brightness outdoor lighting conditions, while maintaining low power consumption. The micro dot matrix projector module is based on surface mount technology (SMT) for seamless integration.

     Dr. David Ahmari, vice president and general manager of Coherent's Optoelectronic Devices and Modules business, said, "Our customizable dot-matrix projector module is a breakthrough product that delivers high-resolution dot-matrix patterns with high contrast and supports exceptional depth resolution at the system level, which is why customers appreciate it. Our vertically integrated 6-inch laser technology platform based in the United States has delivered more than 200 billion VCSEL transmitters to date. So, with the economies of scale of this platform, we can also provide our customers with scalable capabilities, supply chain security and leading quality levels."

     By optimizing the optical device design for the desired points and illumination area (FOI), the new products can be configured with individual lattice patterns to match specific TOF depth sensing applications. The dot-matrix projector provides high contrast, with illuminated areas ranging from 60°x45° to 130°x110° and also covering 100°x20° to provide high image contrast for vacuum robot operating on highly reflective floor surfaces. The lattice projector module can also be combined with a Coherent high resolution flood sensor to support both short and long range imaging.

     Coherent also offers a wide range of sensing components, including a wide range of semiconductor laser diodes covering the near-infrared, short-wave infrared and mid-infrared wavelength ranges, photodiodes, diffractive meta-optics, laser-driven integrated circuits, and various photoelectric components and lighting modules.
