
Bourns announced that its CFN series of metal foil current detection resistors are available in a smaller package size and feature options. The new miniature 0402 and 0603 packages are introduced in the CFN type series and the lower TCR option of ±50 ppm/°C in 0603 and larger package sizes. Using Bourns' metal foil technology construction, the new current detection resistors offer low TCR, low inductance, low noise, excellent reliability and extremely low resistance values. These characteristics make the CFN series the best current detection solution for power supply, stepper motor drive and input amplifier applications. The new smaller size is particularly suited to meet the space-constrained requirements of mobile device designs.
It is very important in electroflumetry to have an appropriately low TCR, which depends on characteristics such as the material used in the resistance element, the power rating and the physical size of the component. Bourns uses metal foil technology to achieve lower resistance values, ranging from 5 to 40 milliohm, and still provides power ratings of 0.25 to 1 W for components small enough for mobile applications. Combining the new ±50 ppm/°C option with low resistance values helps minimize self-heating, allowing the resistor to remain reliable and within the 1-5% tolerance range over time.
The construction and installation of the CFN series is also very favorable. Placing a metal foil resistance element at the bottom of the ceramic substrate shorens the thermal path and improves the heat dissipation characteristics. The rear-mounted type helps prevent surface damage during assembly, which could otherwise lead to short circuits. The expanded products meet the needs of the growing mobile market and provide reliability and stability in all aspects.
