Bourns Introduces Shielded Gigabit Ethernet/PoE+ Chip LAN Transformers for High-Speed Telecom and EMI Suppression

     Bourns, a leading global manufacturer of electronic components, has introduced two new families of shielded Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) chip LAN transformers. Bourns® Model SM453230-121N7YP and Model SM453230-231N7YP series are small, low profile and discrete solutions that provide designers with additional board layout flexibility compared to traditional Chip-LAN modules. Additionally, Bourns' new transformer supports high network speeds up to 10 Gbps, is capable of delivering 700 mA to PoE+, and offers a temperature range of –40 to +85 °C. They are capable of 1500 VAC/60 s high voltage isolation and withstand pulse voltages up to 2400 V, 1.2/50 μs. These advanced features make them ideal for high-speed telecommunications and networking equipment.

     The two transformers differ in inductance, insertion loss, and capacitance characteristics due to the different bit rate ranges they handle. The Bourns® SM453230-231N7YP model supports 1, 2.5, and 5 GbE, while the SM453230-121N7YP model supports 10 GbE. The former can be used with Bourns® SRF2012-900YA type common mode chip inductors, and the latter can be used with SRF2012A-801Y type. These small center-tapped transformers are wound around a drum core and covered with ferrite sheets to simulate the closed magnetic circuit of a toroidal core. The center tap provides common-mode rejection even without additional common-mode filters, and the new series helps reduce EMI troubleshooting efforts.

     Bourns uses its fully automated production process for both new model series, resulting in improved component consistency, quality and reliability. In addition, the process can be adapted to high-volume production by shortening production lead times and reducing costs.
