Bosch's BMP581 barometric pressure sensor brings new levels of precision and performance to mobile devices

     Bosch Sensortec is now introducing its new generation of barometric pressure sensor, the BMP581, which provides ultra-precise altitude tracking with low power consumption for wearables and hearables or IoT devices. Its advantages enable unprecedented innovative applications and are ideal for applications such as fitness tracking, fall detection, indoor positioning and navigation.      Thanks to the greatly improved measurement accuracy, the sensor can sensitively detect centimeter-level changes in height, enabling precise monitoring of motion in fitness applications, even distinguishing individual pull-ups or push-ups, and enabling indoor positioning, Navigation provides high-precision location information, while its floor detection feature provides critical data for U.S. emergency call needs (E-911). This sensor can significantly improve the flight stability and landing accuracy of drones, and can also be used for water level detection in household appliances to avoid overflow.

     The BMP581 has a relative accuracy of up to +/-0.06 hPa and a typical absolute accuracy of +/-0.3 hPa. This sensor offers the best accuracy over a wide measuring range from 300 hPa to 1100 hPa. The typical temperature coefficient offset (TCO) of the BMP581 is only +/-0.5 Pa/K, and the RMS noise is as low as 0.08 Pa @ 1000 hPa (typ). The long-term drift over 12 months is only ±0.1 hPa. Compared to the previous generation Bosch barometric pressure sensor BMP390, the BMP581 requires 85% less power, 80% less noise, and 33% less TCO.

     The typical current consumption of the sensor is only 1.3μA at 1Hz, which can significantly extend battery life, and in deep standby mode, its current consumption is as low as 0.5μA. The sensor provides I2C, I3C and SPI (3-wire/4-wire) digital serial interfaces. The BMP581 is packaged in a compact 10-pin LGA package, shielded by a metal cover, measuring only 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.75 mm3.
