Allegro MicroSystems, a global leader in sensing technology and power semiconductor solutions for motion control and energy-saving systems, announced that it has introduced a new, more advanced giant magnetoresistive (GMR) speed sensor, the ATS19480, that measures the rotational speed of ferromagnetic gears. This speed sensor chip is a single-channel solution ideal for hybrid and pure electric vehicle transmissions, but can also be extended to designs such as two-wheelers, off-road vehicles, and industrial applications that only require speed information.
Allegro integrates advanced GMR technology with leading automotive-grade algorithms and packaging technologies, while leveraging the company's 20+ years of speed sensing expertise, application experience and technological advancements to now offer a leading and comprehensive portfolio of transmission sensors , to meet the diverse needs of today's system developers and manufacturers.
The ATS19480 adds a speed-only version to Allegro's recently announced ATS19580 transmission speed and direction sensor chip family, while setting a new standard for speed sensing, enabling developers to achieve the highest levels of system capability and adaptability. With an industry-leading air gap 50% larger than existing solutions, the ATS19480 further increases design flexibility, expands design margins and tolerance capabilities, and allows for a wider range of flexible sensor mounting locations. These help reduce system complexity, size, weight, cost and energy consumption, which in turn can increase efficiency and minimize carbon emissions.
"As our latest gear sensing single-chip GMR solution, the ATS19480 optimizes performance for emerging electric vehicle applications," said Peter Wells, Director of the Magnetic Speed Sensor Business Unit at Allegro. Technology's air gap and level of precision, our new speed sensor enables designers to do designs hitherto impossible. The ATS19480 is a true game changer, it can be placed almost anywhere, and so can gearboxes It's smaller and lighter than ever before, which is especially important for designers who only need to sense speed parameters."
