TDK introduces compact gate drive transformers

     TDK Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 6762) has expanded the EPCOS InsuGate Series (B78541A) SMT transformer portfolio with the introduction of two new components. The new element uses a manganese zinc (MnZn) ferrite core, which is compact in size and supports high operating voltages, operating frequencies from 100 kHz to 500 kHz, and operating temperatures from -40°C to +150°C. Ideal for IGBT and MOSFET gate drive applications in electric vehicles (AEC-Q200 certified and AQG compliant for vibration) and industrial electronics. The coil ratio of the component winding is 1:1.08 (B78541A2467A003) or 1:1.07:0.6 (B78541A2492A003), depending on the model. With coupling capacitors as low as 4 pF, this SMT transformer is also suitable for SiC or GaN semiconductor applications.

     By combining a high performance plastic material with a relative creepage resistance index (CTI) of ≥600 V and a special coil design, the new element measures only 13.85 x 10.5 x 9.2 mm (L x W x H) and has a shorter space clearance and creepage distance than traditional insulated or potting components. Take UI7 platform as an example, the creepage distance between the primary winding and the secondary winding is > 9.2mm, the partial discharge quenching voltage is ≥ 840V (peak voltage), and it can pass the AC high voltage test of 3 kV (50 Hz, 1 s). Although the component weighs only 2 grams, it complies with IEC 61558 and meets reinforced insulation requirements at operating voltages up to 300 V (AC) or basic insulation requirements at 700 V (DC), thus meeting the requirements of many industrial and automotive applications.
