Intel is one step closer to eliminating the cables that connect the peripherals of personal computers. The company said Thursday that its new chip, designed for office computers, has several features built into it that could make cables useless. The fifth generation CorevPro processors offer more powerful performance, longer battery life and better graphics than the fourth generation. In addition, the chip offers two new features designed to advance the goal of a cable-free workplace.
One is Intel's wireless display technology, which allows users to present on conference room monitors without having to connect various cables first. The other is a wireless docking station that allows users to connect their laptop to a larger monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Intel, the leading maker of chips for desktops and laptops, is planning to launch a completely cable-free PC next year. This has long been hoped for, but progress has been slow. This year, with the development of wireless charging and WiGig short-range fast wireless connection technology, cable-free PCS are getting closer and closer to our lives.
More and more users are using their personal devices for work, and Intel hopes the new chips will keep up with that trend. CorevPro offers more robust security than consumer-grade chips, allowing IT departments to remotely access computers used for work transactions, even when the device is turned off, and technicians can perform maintenance or upgrades from anywhere.
Intel also hopes the new cable-free feature will boost demand for PCS as more consumers turn to smartphones and tablets for their daily computing needs. A more than two-year decline in the PC market eased in 2014, helping to boost Intel's earnings and share price.
In addition to the commercial-grade CorevPro chip, the fifth-generation Corei series chips for consumer desktop systems and high-end notebooks, as well as CoreM chips for notebooks and tablets, have also begun shipping. All three series of chips use a new 14-nanometer manufacturing process. The Corei series also provides a wireless display function called "WiDi", but the vPro series also provides more powerful security features on this basis.
